Gaganendranath Tagore

Archive · 1867-1938 Jorasanko, Kolkata, India

When deformities grow unchecked, but are cherished by blind habit, it becomes the duty of the artist to show that they are ugly and vulgar and therefore abnormal.

Gaganendranath Tagore was one of India’s earliest modern artists, known for moving between Bengal School influences, Japanese brushwork, satire, caricature, and bold experiments with cubist form. His work feels unusually contemporary: sharp, theatrical, shadowed, and graphic. For Wear Human, we see him as an archive artist whose images still carry the energy of disruption, wit, and visual experimentation.
